SPASTICITY
In medical terminology, spasticity is a velocity dependent increase in reflex tone, activated by stretch of the muscle spindle resulting from loss of upper motor neuron inhibition of the spinal reflex arc. In plain English, spasticity is the result of damage to the central nervous system (brain and/or spinal cord), leading to stiffness of muscles that get in the way of normal activities such as walking, bathing, and simple hygiene. The common causes of spasticity include, but are not limited to, the following: cerebral palsy, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis. Occasionally, spasticity can cause unwanted movements, leading to abnormal neck position (torticollis).
Physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians) are uniquely qualified to deal with these disorders. They are well versed in taking care of the disease processes that lead to spasticity and in dealing with both spasticity, as well as the underlying diseases. Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates have established a Spasticity Clinic involving evaluations by both the physiatrist, as well as by physical and occupational therapists. Thus including many medical specialists together in a multi-disciplinary setting in order to treat spasticity. Treatment may include one or more of the following treatments, such as medications, physical or occupational therapy, splinting and casting, and newer treatments such as nerve blocks utilizing Botox or even implantable devices, such as a Baclofen pump. For more information regarding spasticity or the Spasticity Clinic, please feel free to contact Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates at (570) 824-0930.
